How padel ELO works
What is an ELO rating in padel?
An ELO rating is a single number that estimates how strong a padel player is, based only on results. Beating a strong pair raises it; losing to a weaker one lowers it. Unlike ranking points, it can go down as well as up, and it reflects current form rather than accumulated results over a season.
How is a padel ELO rating calculated?
Every player starts at 1000. After each completed match the two sides exchange rating points: the amount depends on how strong the opponents were and how decisive the scoreline was. Beating a much stronger pair moves the rating a lot; beating a much weaker one barely moves it at all. Ratings are recalculated daily as new results come in.
Is padel ELO a ranking or a rating?
Both words are used, and they describe two different things. The ELO rating is the number attached to a player — 2114, say. The ELO ranking is the list of players ordered by that number. So a player has an ELO rating, and the leaderboard they appear on is an ELO ranking. Neither is the official FIP ranking, which is calculated a completely different way.
How is ELO different from the FIP ranking?
The FIP ranking is the official standing and decides seedings and entry. It awards points for how far a player goes in each tournament, it only ever adds points, and it updates once a week. ELO is unofficial and measures level rather than achievement: it moves after every match, it can fall, and it accounts for who you played, not just which round you reached.
What is a good ELO rating in padel?
Around 1000 is where players entering the professional circuit sit. Tour regulars with mixed results tend to land between 1300 and 1700. Seeded players who consistently reach the closing stages sit between 1800 and 2000, and anything above 2000 belongs to the very top of the game.
Can you compare a men's ELO rating with a women's?
No. The two are separate pools, and ratings are only ever exchanged between players who have actually met. A men's rating and a women's rating of the same number do not describe the same standard, so the two leaderboards should be read independently.
What is a pair's ELO rating?
A pair is rated as the average of its two players. That is what makes it possible to estimate the outcome of a match between any two pairs, including pairs that have never played together.

What ELO does not know
A rating is built from results and nothing else. It cannot see an injury, how well a new pairing actually gels, the conditions on the day, or that a player has just come back from a long lay-off. Ratings do not decay during inactivity either, so a player returning after months out carries the number they left with. It is a strong guide, not a forecast.
