Kicksmash technique in padel

The padel kicksmash is a complicated shot with many different parts to it. I will try to break it down as good as I can in this article, but you should also consider checkoug out the training progressions and videos sections.

Brushing the ball upwards and to the side

The whole reason it is called a kicksmash is that the ball kicks upwards after hitting the back glass. In order for this top happen you need a lot of top spin on the ball. Top spin is generated by brushing the ball upwards as you hit it. If you want the ball to also go out of the court on the side, you should also give it some sidespin when brushing the ball.

Bent legs with arched back

In order to generate power and upward momentum in the shot you should bend your legs and slightly arch your back. Then in preparing for your shot you should jump with your legs.

Where to aim

If you want the ball to go out of the court on the side, it is crucial where you hit the back glass. If you hit too much towards the middle it has no chance of going out, and if you hit too far towards the corner it will just hit the 4 meter side fence blocking it from going out of the court.

From close to the net

When you are fairly close to the net you can hit downwards and have the ball bounce fairly early on the opponents side of the court. Before the service line is optimal.

From further back the court

The further back on the court you are, the more of a curved trajectory you will need because you are not able to hit the ball downwards due to the fact that you are far from the net. The amount of topspin you generate is crucial to achieve both this curved trajectory, and ensuring the ball bounces high off the back glass.
