Professional Padel in China

A Chinese professional has to leave the country to find competition. 43 Chinese players hold a world ranking and compete on the FIP circuit, with no domestic tour of any depth to progress through and no junior structure feeding them from below. Play at home is concentrated in commercial venues in Shanghai and Beijing, which is where nearly all of China's courts were built after 2020. The sport is establishing itself in a country with deep institutional strength in badminton, table tennis and tennis, and competes with all three for coaches, court space and attention.

Is padel popular in China?

Padel is growing but remains small relative to the size of the country. It is concentrated in the largest coastal cities, particularly Shanghai and Beijing, and has little presence outside the major urban centres.

When did padel arrive in China?

Effectively in the 2020s. China had almost no padel infrastructure before then, and the sport arrived through expatriate communities, international schools and commercial operators rather than through existing clubs.

Why has padel grown more slowly in China than in Europe?

Because there was no incumbent padel culture to build on. European growth could attach to established tennis clubs with members already in place, whereas in China courts, coaching, competition and an audience all had to be created at the same time.

Does China compete internationally in padel?

China sits inside the sport's formal governance structure, though competitive participation at international level remains limited relative to the country's broader sporting resources.

Where can you play padel in China?

Play is concentrated in commercial venues in the largest cities, with Shanghai and Beijing accounting for a substantial share of the country's courts.
