Professional Padel in Mexico

Mexico hosts one of the four Majors on the Premier Padel calendar and sends almost nobody into it. The Acapulco Major brings the sport's leading players to the country every year, while the 109 Mexican players holding a world ranking compete mostly a tier below, on the FIP circuit, building positions rather than defending them. That gap is the defining feature of the professional game here, and it is closing slowly: court construction accelerated sharply through the 2020s and widened the amateur base, but the structure that turns club players into professionals is younger than the courts are.

History of padel in Mexico

Padel was invented in Mexico. Enrique Corcuera built the first court at his Acapulco home in 1969 because he lacked the space for a tennis court, and the game left with a house guest and became a Spanish sport. Half a century on it is growing at home again, with 109 Mexican players holding a world ranking.

Where was padel invented?

In Acapulco, Mexico, in 1969. Enrique Corcuera built the first court at his home at Las Brisas because he did not have room for a full-sized tennis court. The dimensions he chose, twenty metres by ten with three-metre walls, are still standard today.

Who wrote the first rules of padel?

Viviana Corcuera, Enrique Corcuera's wife, drafted the first set of rules and presented them to him as a birthday gift.

If padel was invented in Mexico, why is Spain the centre of the sport?

Because the game travelled with a guest. Alfonso de Hohenlohe played at Corcuera's home and built courts at his Marbella Club hotel on returning to Spain, and an Argentine from the same circle took it to Buenos Aires. Both countries developed the sport faster than Mexico did.

Is padel growing in Mexico?

Yes. Mexico appears among the high-growth markets in current industry analysis, with court construction accelerating through the 2020s from a comparatively small base.

Does Mexico compete internationally in padel?

Mexico has maintained a national federation and competitive structure throughout the sport's history and contests international championships, though without the depth of the Spanish and Argentine systems.
