Professional Padel in Spain

The hardest padel competition in the world is not a tour event, it is the Spanish domestic circuit — the level a player has to clear before a professional career is even plausible. That filter is why Spain supplies most of the men's and women's elite, with Arturo Coello, Alejandro Galán and Juan Lebrón among the pairs that have held the top positions through the modern era, and why the women's side won the world title in Doha in 2024. 709 Spanish players hold a world ranking, a figure no other country approaches. The same championship also produced the result that keeps the picture honest: Argentina took the men's title.

Padel arrived in Spain in 1974, when Alfonso de Hohenlohe built two courts at his Marbella Club hotel after playing the game in Mexico. Half a century on, Spain is the sport's centre of gravity: its world governing body sits in Madrid, no country has more courts, and 709 Spanish players hold a world ranking.

When did padel arrive in Spain?

Padel reached Spain in 1974, when Alfonso de Hohenlohe built two courts at his Marbella Club hotel on the Costa del Sol. He had played the game in Mexico on the court of its inventor, Enrique Corcuera, and brought the idea back with him. It spread from Marbella through Andalusia and Madrid over the following decade, helped by the tennis champion Manolo Santana, who organised some of the first tournaments on the coast.

Is padel more popular than tennis in Spain?

Yes. Padel is the second most played participation sport in Spain behind football, and more people play it than play tennis. Spain also has more padel courts than any other country, spread across private clubs, municipal centres and converted tennis facilities. The reasons are practical: a beginner can hold a rally on a first afternoon, a court costs far less to build than a tennis court and fits where one will not, and every match is played in fours.

Who governs padel in Spain?

The Federación Española de Pádel is the national governing body, recognised after Spain's Consejo Superior de Deportes accepted padel as a sport in its own right in the early 1990s. Most day-to-day administration sits with the autonomous regional federations, which issue licences, run club leagues and stage regional championships. The International Padel Federation, which governs the sport worldwide, is also based in Madrid.

Has Spain won the Padel World Championship?

Yes, many times. Spain's men have taken the team title in 1998, 2008, 2010 and 2021, in a competition Argentina has otherwise dominated since it began in 1992. The women have done better still: after team titles in 1998, 2000 and 2010, they have won every edition of the women's championship from 2014 onwards. Spain has also hosted the championship several times, in Madrid, Murcia and Palma de Mallorca.

Why is Spain so strong in women's padel?

Depth, mostly. Spain has the largest base of federated players and clubs in the sport, a junior and regional championship structure that finds players early, and a domestic league in which a professional earns a first ranking. The women's game also professionalised in Spain before it did elsewhere, so several generations have trained alongside one another: Carolina Navarro and Alejandra Salazar, then Gemma Triay, then the players who followed them.

Which Spanish players have topped the world rankings?

Carolina Navarro was the first Spaniard to spend long spells at the head of the women's rankings, and Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay have both led them since. In the men's game Juan Lebrón reached the top alongside Paquito Navarro in 2019, then held it with Alejandro Galán through three straight seasons at the start of the 2020s, ending a long Argentine hold on the position. Arturo Coello followed them there.

What happened to the World Padel Tour?

It was absorbed into Premier Padel. The World Padel Tour, owned by the Barcelona brewer Damm, ran the professional circuit from 2013 until the end of 2023. Premier Padel was launched in 2022 by the International Padel Federation and Qatar Sports Investments, and once the two came under the same ownership the World Padel Tour stopped operating. The professional calendar is no longer Spanish-owned, but Spain still hosts more of it than any other country.
