Professional Padel in Sweden

Sweden has one of the highest padel participation rates per head in Europe and one of its shortest professional lists — a gap that follows from how compressed its boom was rather than from the standard of play. 46 Swedish players hold a world ranking, competing largely on the FIP circuit, and the women's team finished among the top eight nations at the 2024 World Championships in Doha. Adam Axelsson, born in 2005, has won FIP titles on three continents with Simon Vasquez — Gold in Dubai, Silver in Roeselare, Bronze at home in Gothenburg, where Sweden stages its own stop on the calendar.

History of padel in Sweden

No country has lived through padel's commercial cycle as completely as Sweden. Courts went from a few hundred to more than four thousand in three years, then a hundred facilities closed and ninety companies failed. What did not collapse was the playing: participation held, and 46 Swedish players hold a world ranking.

What happened to padel in Sweden?

Sweden built more courts than any country outside Spain between 2019 and 2022, passing 4,200, then experienced a sharp correction. By the end of 2024 more than a hundred facilities had closed and around ninety padel companies had gone bankrupt, with capital losses estimated near €500 million.

Did Swedes stop playing padel?

No, and this is the most misunderstood part of the story. More than 600,000 people were still playing in early 2024, a participation rate higher per head than any European country except Spain. The collapse was in supply, not demand.

Why did so many Swedish padel businesses fail?

Indoor padel centres are property businesses as much as sports businesses. They were built at scale on debt, financed on the assumption that participation growth would continue indefinitely, and when interest rates rose that debt repriced against facilities that were never going to fill at the rates required.

How many padel courts does Sweden have?

Sweden passed 4,200 courts at the peak of its construction boom. The number in active operation is lower following the closures of 2023 and 2024, with some failed facilities reopened under new operators with lower costs.

When did padel arrive in Sweden?

Swedes encountered the game on holiday in Spain from the early 1980s, but the first Swedish courts date to the late 1990s. Growth was slow for two decades, with roughly forty courts by 2013 and ninety by 2015, before the boom years.

Is Swedish padel recovering?

The market that remains is smaller and better matched to actual demand. Failed facilities have often been bought out of bankruptcy and reopened with lower cost bases, and court hire prices have fallen from boom-era levels.
