Why did RS start with a ball rather than a racket?
Because a ball is the hardest thing to get away with faking. Players buy them repeatedly, compare them directly and notice inconsistency immediately, so launching with one is a claim about manufacturing rather than about design. It was also the product Söderling's tennis background left him best placed to judge.
What defines RS Padel's design language?
Restraint, in a category that has very little of it. Most padel frames are covered in airbrushed graphics and generation numbers; RS uses flat colour, minimal branding and a great deal of black and white. That is a commercial position rather than laziness, because a racket is carried and looked at as much as it is used, and a proportion of buyers actively want the quiet option.
How does RS differ from the Spanish padel brands?
In where the decisions are made rather than where the frames are built. Construction follows Spanish practice, because that is where padel manufacturing knowledge sits, but the design brief, the aesthetic and the commercial focus are Nordic. The brand also sells tennis and padel together, which almost no Spanish padel specialist does.
About RS Sports
Robin Söderling's career ended abruptly. He was a top-five player who had beaten Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros and reached two finals there when illness took him off the tour, and RS Sports was founded in 2013 in the space that left. It began where he had the firmest opinions, with tennis strings, balls and rackets, and was built on a straightforward premise: products developed by players, for players.
Padel arrived because Sweden did. No country outside Spain took to the game as quickly, and within a few years there were courts in converted warehouses in every Swedish city. RS moved into the category from a position most brands do not have, with an owner who understood racket manufacture and a home market buying padel equipment faster than anywhere in northern Europe.
The sequence it chose is telling. The first RS padel product was a ball, developed with padel professional Simon Vasquez, and only then did the first premium frame arrive from work with Cayetano Rocafort. Starting with a ball is a manufacturer's instinct rather than a marketer's: balls are bought repeatedly, judged without much room for narrative, and impossible to fake.
Visually RS is the most restrained brand in padel, with monochrome frames, minimal graphics, a logo and little else, in a category where most competitors airbrush. Underneath, construction follows Spanish practice, which is where the manufacturing knowledge sits. That combination of northern design and southern build is the brand's whole proposition, and it appeals to players who want serious equipment without the decoration.
