Professional Padel in Italy
Italy has more ranked professionals than any country except Spain and Argentina, and not yet a player at the very top of either tour. 162 Italian players hold a world ranking, and the women's team was among the top seeds at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, but the elite end is still arriving. What Italian professionals do have is the highest level of competition at home: Rome's BNL Italy Major is one of four Majors on the Premier Padel calendar alongside Doha, Paris and Acapulco. The depth beneath them came fast — padel sits inside the Italian tennis federation, which gave it a club estate to grow into.

History of padel in Italy
Italy came late to padel and then moved faster than any country in Europe, passing ten thousand courts in 2025 to become only the second nation to do so. The tennis federation absorbed the sport outright rather than leaving it to grow alongside, and 162 Italian players now hold a world ranking.

Who governs padel in Italy?
The Federazione Italiana Tennis e Padel. Italy folded padel into its existing tennis federation rather than creating a separate body, which gave the sport immediate access to an established club network, licence system and competitive calendar.
Why did padel grow so quickly in Italy?
Largely because of that governance decision. Courts could be added at clubs that already had members, staff and facilities, so the cost of entry for operators was low and players moved from casual play into organised competition quickly.
Does Italy host a professional padel event?
Yes. Rome stages one of the sport's Major tournaments, and the crowds it attracts have made Italy one of padel's most significant commercial markets.
When did padel start in Italy?
The sport was played in Italy from the early 1990s but remained marginal for two decades. The expansion that produced today's court numbers began in the 2020s.
